(The Man Called Abraham)

*Human Wisdom Will Fail You*

Genesis 12:11-16

_”As he approached Egypt, he said to his wife Sarai, “Look, I know that you are a beautiful woman. When the Egyptians see you they will say, ‘This is his wife.’ Then they will kill me but will keep you alive. So tell them you are my sister so that it may go well for me because of you and my life will be spared on account of you.”_

_When Abram entered Egypt, the Egyptians saw that the woman was very beautiful. When Pharaoh’s officials saw her, they praised her to Pharaoh. So Abram’s wife was taken into the household of Pharaoh, and he did treat Abram well on account of her. Abram received sheep and cattle, male donkeys, male servants, female servants, female donkeys, and camels.”_

It is amazing what we may end up doing in times when we are caught up in fear. For majority of us, lying seems to be the cushion we fall on to escape threats and punishment. The question however is, does lying really solve the problem?

Abram was being led by God in every step of his journey after he left his country. He would build altars and worship at every place he stationed. That is to say that he sought the face of God at every point in time. However, severe famine struck the place where he was residing and he decided to move to Egypt as a means of escape. As to whether that was approved by God or not was not indicated.

When he got to the land, fear gripped him and he asked Sarah to lie that she was his sister, so they will not kill him and take her. Ironically, that lie rather caused Pharaoh to take Sarah to his household. Abraham’s plan had failed miserably. It took the intervention of God for Sarah not to be touched by Pharaoh.

Beloved, there are two important lessons here as follows: 1. Lying does not solve problems, it only postpones and worsens their consequences. 2. Human wisdom eventually fails; thus we need to seek God’s wisdom at every moment of life. May God help us all, amen.

Heavenly Father, please forgive me for the times I resorted to lies and human wisdom during times of desperation. Please help me to stick to Your will for my life especially in adverse situations. In Jesus name, amen.

_Question for Meditation_
